The Laundry List of Details...
This gorgeous pair of antique Stile Liberty Milano accent chairs, featuring delicate floral inlay, has been reupholstered in a bold and beautiful combination of contemporary and vintage designer fabrics. On the seats, Lee Jofa '"Sevilla" On the inside and outside backs, picture back style, Stroheim & Romann "Ganges" hand embroidered wool on linen circa 1970. The trim: a deep teal textured velvet, appropriately called "Opulent", by Greenhouse fabrics. The inlay is a combination of marquetry and mother-of-pearl. Past refinishing has lent the mother-of-pearl a rich, warm golden glow. I chose not to strip the frames for fear of damaging the inlay. Instead, I fully retouched and polished them. The frames have accumulated some minor dents and scratches over the past century and a half, but none that detract from their beauty. The largest of these imperfections may be seen in the last photo.
There was a maker's mark inside one of the chair frames. As a result, I was able to trace them back to an furniture maker and upholsterer named G. Paravidini who owned a shop in the Foro Bonaparte in late 1800's Milan. They are Milan Liberty Style (Italian Art Nouveau, 1870-1920, sometimes called Stile Floreale) one branch of which favored clean lines similar to British Arts and Crafts. (For posterity, I have tucked a note inside each chair about the origins of these beautiful frames.)
This pair of chairs is truly one-of-a-kind. I picture them (making a striking statement) along side a tea table in a cozy sun room. Maybe yours?
