Utterly charming antique Victorian Queen Anne fiddle back nursing/sewing rocker with saddle seat. I love this chair so much I have given it a temporary home in my cabin until it finds it's forever home. So much rustic character! The finish is timeworn, but really suits the chair. I chose to simply buff the surface with fine grade steel wool and and rub it down with a few coats of tung oil to preserve the patina. This rocker is quite sturdy and easily supports the weight of a full grown adult. The mortise and tenon joints are in very good shape. One had the slightest bit of give, so I treated it to a small bead of traditional hide glue which firmed it up nicely. The saddle seat is made of two slightly asymmetrical pieces, one just a bit wider than the other, which leads me to believe this is a handmade chair. The back corners of the seat are braced on the underside with interesting rustic metal brackets of a kind I have never seen before. They are square and are stamped "PAT APL'D FOR" (patent applied for). (Please see photos).
